Almost 50% of the world’s oil being consumed today is used in transportation. In cars, boats, tankers, airplanes and almost every machine that moves things uses oil for energy. The number of cars purchased in the market is also increasing. In most progressive and developing countries the number of cars used every year is increasing as it suggests a worldwide, billion dollar industry. With more cars purchased, more
oil is needed to run them. The transportation industry is the biggest player in demand of the world’s oil. They are one of the biggest factors that will eventually contribute in saving the earth or destroying it.

On the other hand, transportation is also one of biggest sources of air pollution in the world. In Hong Kong, the collective pollution of cars has made the air virtually dangerous to breathe. In other developing countries the rising number of cars is also the main concern as they foster heavy traffic and heavy smokes are emitted almost 24 hours a day. Factories could be very small if it’s compared to the collective strength being put out by transportations. Smoke emitted from cars is slowly affecting our ozone layer ultimately getting the earth hotter everyday. The phenomenon of global warming can’t just be pointed out because of transportation but they certainly are one of biggest factors of this phenomenon.

If we lessen our use of oil, we can certainly lessen our emissions to the atmosphere. However, since our population increases yearly, we can’t just remove cars in the street since transportation is essential not only to personal gain but to the country’s general development.

To answer the need of the people of transportation and the need of the environment for lesser emissions, we have to change our transportation options by using less oil or gasoline. If you’re just purchasing a car for you or your family always ask for a car which has a fuel economy label. Car makers have obliged themselves to create this type of cars so that will be more appealing to the public. On the other hand, hybrid cars are also pushed to regular consumers. Hybrid cars don’t only run in gas, it also runs in electricity. This combination of oil and electricity may still cost some oil but it virtually erases gas emissions. Hybrid cars are considered by many as green cars since they are the model of transportation without harming the environment.

If you’re thinking of solar powered cars, the world is still yet to see one. We are still developing them and the only place we could appreciate it is in Hawaii where they hold an annual competition among solar powered cars.

In Asian countries, the rising cost of gasoline has led to the use of liquefied petroleum gas. Although it doesn’t have as much power as the gasoline, it’s perfect for family transportation. In Taiwan, there are already LPG powered mini-bikes. The cost of LPG to gasoline less by more than 50% and the emission is not as much as the gasoline.

We have to do our part in helping the environment. If we save in gasoline, not only do we save some money, we are also helping nature.
