dangerous chemicals. Although some says it’s just a fad but if you take a look at it closely, it should have been a necessity to ensure that we are healthy at all times.
We can easily find organic food in most of our supermarket. When organic food was not that popular, organic food are rare in supermarkets. Usually we have to drive miles and miles just to get to the farmers market to get our organic ingredients. There was even a time we had to visit a farmer and see his farming practices. That used to be the only way how people will know if the food is organic. There is no governing body to tell us what ingredients that we see in our supermarket are organic. Although there are tags that say organic, only the manufacturers says that and no one else has certified them. That’s why most of the health conscious people go for an extra mile to know which farmer grows organic food. The farms are usually run by small families in their extended backyard and profit from it mostly in part-time basis.
Now, the demand for organic food is steadily increasing. In response to this demand, the government has instructed the USDA to set the standards for organic food production. In 1990, the National Organic Program was launched. Their aim is to grade and evaluate different farms if they are really producing organic food. Aside from US, Australia, UK, Canada, Sweden and Japan has also created a regulatory commission to monitor farms that claim they only produce organic farm ingredients. They all certify worthy products so that the other persons in larger cities don’t have to go to farms and talk to farmers. All they need to look for is the seal and they will know the product is organic.
Patronizing organic foods have economic, personal and environmental impact. The organic food industry is increasing by double digit percentage every year and it doesn’t show any signs of waning even though organic foods are usually more expensive than the regular, processed foods. For personal impact, organic foods will foster better health especially for babies. Studies have shown that the chemicals and pesticides found in babies’ body all comes from the food they intake. Without processed foods, farmers don’t have to use pesticides which could be dangerous while being used. Even if the farmer observers strict prevention measures, it still not guaranteed since pesticides can go airborne. Lastly, organic foods helps the environment since the land is not are with pesticides. They are grown naturally and the land will always be healthy to grow more organic products.
