The use of cleaning products is an essential part of modern life. These cleaning products are made from chemicals and medicinal preparations. Most of the cleaning products contain chemicals that can cause harm to the environment. The disposal of these chemicals can affect the surroundings, the soil, the plants, the under ground water and also the air when burning of the disposed cleaning products takes place.
All over the world special methods to dispose of these harmful cleaning materials and products have been devised. This article aims at bringing out the importance of proper disposal of cleaning material and products and their effects on the environment.

Identification of cleaning material: The cleaning material can range from soaps to chemicals used to clean the floors and walls. Most of the cleaning products do not harm the environment. Like the paper based cleaning materials but can be recycled and thereby indirectly contribute to environmental control. The water soluble cleaning products are being catered for in the waste water treatment plants. Also special hazardous waste collection programs are being proposed to prevent hazardous products being disposed in the waste water or with the other waste. Such hazardous material is difficult to remove and cause pollution of the environment.

Methods to dispose cleaning products: the cleaning products need to be preserved in their original package to identify their nature and effects on the environment.  Also the cleaning products can be used up for other purposes in the house itself thus preventing any need for disposing them. In other cases they can be disposed in proper places that enable recycling or treatment of the waste before final disposal in the community waste disposal areas.
The cleaning material packaging also contains the disposal instructions. Hence the importance of preserving the original packaging of the cleaning materials and following the disposal instructions is very vital.

Most of the water soluble products like soaps and detergents can be flushed down the drain since they can be treated in water treatment plants. Some cleaning powders can also be disposed off through the waste water drain. Also it is very vital not to mix the cleaning products during disposal. This prevents their proper identification and can lead to further chemical by products that affect the environment.
Materials such as oils and varnishes need to be disposed separately since they can harm the soil and plants. Also poisonous chemicals can be disposed off in special containers that prevent their spillage.

Disposing plastic products: Plastic products and cleaning materials can be easily recycled. The recycling plants for plastic are ever increasing. The plastic cleaning material generally contain polyurethane compounds. These compounds can harm the environment if not disposed at the right places for recycling. Several government policies and methods have been devised to preserve the proper disposal system for plastics are in place. Non profit organizations and activists also involve actively in preventing plastic waste piling and aid in recycling the plastic properly.
